Driving via the Channel Tunnel, Paris and A20: approx 10hrs from Calais
From the Tunnel, go direct to Paris and get on the peripherique.Pick up the A10 towards Bordeaux and at Orleans take the A71 to Vierzon then A20 for Limoges and Toulouse. This is autoroute, so is fast, easy driving - and as yet no péages on the A20 except for 3fr50 at the end. Stay on the A20, following the signs for Toulouse. Turn off at Junction 56, signed for Figeac, Rocamador and Labastide-Murat. Once off the autoroute you come to a roundabout. Go straight ahead, signed for Livernon. This gets you on to a good fast country road, the D802. You shortly turn off on to the D146 for Fontanes du Causse and Espedaillac. At Espediallac, continue on D146 towards Grézes. At D653 turn left and a few minutes later at Grézes turn right on to D38. The road winds a bit and after a while you’ll catch glimpses of the cliffs of the Célé valley, before winding down the hill into Brengues. Cross over the main road then over a bridge across the Célé. You’re nearly here – now refer to Map 4 click here. Take the right hand road up the hill – not the immediate right after the bridge, which will take you into somebody’s back yard, but the one just past the woodyard on the right. It ought to be signed for St Préigne, but the sign keeps falling over, so may not be! The road winds steeply uphill. Simply follow it for about a kilometre and a half until you come to what is in fact the only right turn other than farm tracks – it’s a very hard right, almost back on yourself, and goes uphill too. Don’t panic if it feels like the middle of nowhere - it is! You’re now about three minutes away – follow the road uphill, which now has grass growing up the middle of it, then as it swings round a bend and starts downhill, you’ll get a glimpse of ‘Les Pégouriés’, throug the hedge half right. The road straightens and continues down; at the bottom of the hill turn right into our lane – you’ll see a handpainted wooden sign for ‘Les Pégouriés’ on the right plus a couple of large ‘wheelie-bins’. You’ll find us 200 metres up the lane.
Via Paris and the Auvergne: approx 11hrs
Start as above, then from Orleans, take the A71 for Clermont Ferrand. This is fast and pleasant autoroute. South of Clermont Ferrand, turn off on to the N122 for Aurilliac (Junction 24). This takes you through the Parc des Volcans, the Auvergne and th emountains of the Cantal. It’s a picturesque if somewhat twisting route. From Aurilliac, follow the N120 to Figeac, then refer to Map 2 for local directions.
Via Caen (9.5hrs) or St Malo (9hrs)
rom Caen, the most direct route is Argentan>Alencon>Le Mans>Tours>Poitiers>Limoges then pick up the A20 towards Toulouse. South of Brive, turn off at Junction 56 and follow instructions in first paragraph above from Labastide-Murat.
Another good route is Alencon>Mamers>Chateaudun>Orleans>Vierzon> Limoges. Or try one of our favourite routes, combining autoroute driving with scenic but fast D-roads: head for Alencon>Mamers>Chateaudun>Blois>Bellac>Limoges then pick up A20 for Toulouse and proceed as above.
From St Malo, take N157 to Rennes, D163 to Angers, N146 to Poitiers and on to Limoges, then pick up the A20 for Toulouse and proceed as above.
BY AIR via Rodez
Ryanair offer cheap flights from Stanstead to Rodez, about an hour and a quarter’s drive from us - turn left out of the airport then simply follow the main road through a series of villages - St Christophe le Vallon etc - towards Decazeville. From Decazeville, head for Capdenac and Figeac. As you arrive in Figeac, cross the river and turn to the left, following the road along the river, which is to your left. Follow the signs for Cajarc, turning left over a bridge, then immediately turning right at a roundabout on to the D19. (As a point of reference, there’s a Weldom DIY store and a Champion supermarket on your left immediately after the roundabout. Now go to Map 2...
via Toulouse or Carcassonne
Toulouse is the nearest major airport, 1 hr 45 mins drive from us. Both Air France and British Airways have daily flights from Gatwick and Heathrow. Easyjet fly to Toulouse from Gatwick, whilst Ryanair fly to Carcassonne, south of Toulouse, from Stanstead. You can also fly to Toulouse from other UK airports (eg Norwich, Newcastle) via Amsterdam or Brussels. BMI and British European both offer cheap flights from a number of UK airports.
Car rental is available at all airports, with all the usual suspects represented. However, it’s well worth phoning round or checking out the Web, as the smaller companies often have very good deals. I’ve found Sixt to be very good, and cheaper than the big boys (but not represented at all airports).
Driving from Toulouse
Take the A62 towards Bordeaux, turn on to the A20 at Montauban (Junction 10)towards Cahors.Turn off the A20 for Caussade(Junction 59), then in town centre take a right turn on to the D17 signed for Puylaroque, Limogne and St Cirq la Popie. Just after Limogne, turn left on to the D19 for Cajarc. At Cajarc, turn left into the town, then left on to the D17 signed for Marcilhac and Gramat. After 6km, you come to a large crossroads at the top of the hill – turn right, then after the second crossroads sign, look for a small left turn (it’s signed for Mas de Pegourié, but unfortunately the sign faces away from you!). You’re nearly here – refer to Map 3
BY RAIL
Eurostar provides a very civilised alternative way of getting to France. It’s only about 20 mins by metro from Gare du Nord (Eurostar terminal) to Austerlitz, from where SNCF run regular services to Figeac (sometimes you have to change at Brive – make sure you get on the right half of the train at Brive!) and Cahors, both around 6 hour journeys. Car rental is available at both Cahors and Figeac. You can travel overnight to Cahors, arriving early morning; going back, there’s a midnight train with 1st class couchettes from Figeac, arriving in Paris around 7a.m. You can even get a very nice shower at Austerlitz, with plenty of time to get to Eurostar for a train that arrives in London Waterloo around 1015am! There are sometimes very good value deals available, both with Eurostar and on the TGV (eg Lille-Bordeaux), so it’s worth enquiring via Eurostar, SNCF or a travel agent.
Head for SW France, midway between Limoges and Toulouse
